
Pre-departure
To become foreign students and visit Universitas Jember, Indonesia, all for-eign citizens must follow the regula-tion of the Republic of Indonesia espe-cially the immigration procedures.
When they are accepted as Student of the Universitas Jember, they should apply for several immigration and resi-dence processes, both from abroad and during visit in Indonesia. Foreign citizens who are already in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia and ac-cepted in Universitas Jember apply for a residence permit according to statu-tory regulations by bringing study per-mit from the Directorate General of Science and Technology and Higher Education Institutions.
Here some documents or term that you will be familiar with:
- Study Permit: an official authorization issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia. It grants international students permission to study at an Indonesian educational institution for a specified period.
- Student Visa: an official document issued by a country’s government that grants a foreign national permission to enter, stay, or leave the country for a specific purpose and duration. In the context of international students in Indonesia, a Student Visa (KITAS) is required after obtaining a Study Permit. - VoA, Free Visa & Calling Visa Subject List (Check your country).
- Visa on Arrival (VoA) Visa on Arrival (VoA) is a short-term visa that allows foreign nationals from eligible countries to enter Indonesia for tourism, business, or social purposes.
- Free Visa is a visa exemption granted to nationals of specific countries, allowing them to enter Indonesia without obtaining a visa in advance or paying for a VoA.
- Calling Visa applies to nationals from certain countries who require special approval from the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights before obtaining a visa. These countries are typically subject to stricter entry regulations due to diplomatic, security, or administrative reasons. Applicants from these countries must undergo additional screening before being granted a visa to enter Indonesia.
Study Permit
At this point, you may still be abroad. Therefore, your university in Indonesia should help you with the application process to get your Study Permit from the Indonesian Directorate General of Higher Education. The documents you need to submit to apply for a Study Permit include:
- three copies of your passport;
- a copy of the Recommendation Letter issued by your university;
- a copy of your Letter of Acceptance;
- the completed application form;
- a Letter of Recommendation from the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate in your country of residence;
- a copy of your academic transcript and records;
- your Curriculum Vitae (CV);
- two passport-sized photographs;
- a Letter of Financial Guarantee or a sponsorship certificate which proves you can cover your study and living expenses; and
- health certificate.
After your Study Permit is issued, the Directorate General of Higher Education will forward it to the Immigration Department Head Office in Jakarta, so they can issue your visa.
Visa
